Many people have been to a stage show and watched in amazement as their friends followed the instructions of the hypnotist to the letter. Along with Hypnosis in TV and movies, the stage hypnotist sometimes gives the average person the wrong idea about hypnosis. While some stage hypnotists tend to take the attitude that they will not ask the subjects to do anything they would not want to do on stage, others have no limitations to what they will ask. This is especially the case with some of the adult stage hypnosis shows in Las Vegas.

When working with therapeutic hypnosis, which is also known as Hypnotherapy in some locations, it is important to make sure that the client has no misconceptions about hypnosis, as this can create challenges with the process of entering into the trance state as well as resolving the presenting issue. This is also true in terms of Self Hypnosis, which many hypnotists teach their clients so they will be able to reinforce the suggestions during their session later on their own.

Learning Self Hypnosis is very effective for individuals who find themselves under excessive stress due to issues at work, financial problems or difficulties with their relationships, to name a few. Entering into Hypnosis tends to banish stress by allowing the person to relax and move to another place, another state of mind, leaving the stress behind. Stress cannot exist in the hypnotic state, so by taking a few moments to enter into a trance state, which provides a multitude of benefits, the person is able to let go of the stress and anxiety that seems to be overwhelming them. These people report that even a short time in hypnosis allows them to distance themselves from the causes of their stress and anxiety, and once they emerge from hypnosis they are better able to deal with the situation that brought on the stress. Many report that they are able to come up with another way of looking at the situation, while others are able to come up with an idea to resolve the problem while in the trance state.

Self Hypnosis is also an effective way to continue the work that was started with the hypnotherapist in their office. By entering into the trance state and focusing on properly phrased suggestions, the client is able to continue reinforcing the suggestions provided in their hypnosis session, adding to the effectiveness. Many people enjoy the extreme relaxation that is one of the qualities of hypnosis, and find they are able to get a better power nap by entering into self hypnosis for 5 to 10 minutes than by taking a 30 to 60 minute nap!

The fact is that All Hypnosis is Self Hypnosis. Even when working with a hypnotist it is the client who is doing all the work, the hypnotist is merely acting as a guide, leading you into the hypnotic state. While it is possible to learn self hypnosis on your own or by listening to a self hypnosis recording, the most effective way to learn self hypnosis is by working with a qualified hypnotist who understands how to teach you self hypnosis. I generally provide a suggestion that my client will be able to return to the trance state any time the follow a 3 step process which involves taking 3 deep breaths, allowing their eyes to close and repeating a keyword 3 times.

After they emerge from the hypnotic state, I ask that they enter into self hypnosis 3 times before leaving my office. Then I suggest that the practice entering into self hypnosis 3-5 times a day for 2 weeks, even if only for 30-60 seconds at a time.
